When coming to Nha Trang, don't miss out Nha Trang Oceanography Institute. Here, you can learn about a variety of marine species and explore the diverse exhibitions and interactive displays that showcase the incredible biodiversity of the ocean. Coming here, you will not only discover the marine world but also take lots of amazing photos.

The Nha Trang Institute of Oceanography is one of the oldest and most reputable marine research institutions in Southeast Asia. It is also home to one of the largest collections of marine specimens in Vietnam. The institution was established on September 14, 1922, under a decree issued by the Governor-General of French Indochina. Originally known as the Indochina Service of Oceanography and Fisheries, it was established to survey fisheries resources in the East Sea.
Over more than a century, the institution has undergone several name changes and reorganizations, from the Indochina Institute of Oceanography and Nha Trang Oceanographic Institute to the Nha Trang Institute of Marine Research, before becoming the Institute of Oceanography as it is known today, under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. Throughout its history, the institute has contributed to foundational research on ocean currents, continental shelf geology, and marine ecosystems in the East Sea, including research related to the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos.
Viện nghiên cứu và bảo tàng
One important distinction for visitors is that the Institute of Oceanography itself is primarily a scientific research facility and is not open to the public for general sightseeing. The area visited by tourists is the National Oceanographic Museum located within the institute's grounds. The museum displays selected live and preserved specimens, as well as research materials presented for public education. Therefore, when looking up directions or ticket prices, visitors should make sure they are searching for the Museum of Oceanography, which is the visitor area, rather than the entire institute complex.

The Aquarium area covers approximately 5,000m² and houses more than 300 species of marine life, including sea turtles, rays, small sharks, groupers, lionfish, and boxfish. The tanks are arranged in various acrylic displays, allowing visitors to observe schools of fish swimming around them. One of the highlights is the aquarium tunnel, the largest tank in the area, where visitors can watch marine animals swimming above and around them, creating an immersive experience without having to enter the water.
A miniature mangrove forest covering approximately 120m² is located within the Aquarium area. It recreates the transitional ecosystem between land and sea, which provides important habitats for many species while also helping to absorb waves and naturally protect coastal areas.
This approximately 200m² exhibition area displays some of the museum's most impressive specimens. One of the main highlights is an 18-meter-long, approximately 10-ton humpback whale skeleton. It was excavated from the Red River Delta after being buried for more than 200 years and is among the exhibits most frequently photographed by visitors. The area also features a dugong skeleton, representing a rare and endangered marine mammal, as well as a manta ray specimen weighing nearly 1 ton and measuring approximately 3.5m long and 5m wide. Informational panels provide additional scientific context, helping visitors understand the life cycle and natural habitat of each species.
This area introduces artificial reef models, including concrete structures, steel frames, and old vessels placed on the seabed to provide surfaces for coral growth and shelter for marine organisms. The exhibition helps visitors understand how scientists use artificial reefs as one approach to restoring marine ecosystems affected by overfishing and environmental changes.
This exhibition area presents historical and modern maps, models of the archipelagos, and photographs from different periods of scientific surveys. It also includes biological and geological specimens collected from the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa areas, such as corals, seabed samples, groupers, and lobsters. Larger models, including a model of Truong Sa Lon Island featuring a sovereignty marker and lighthouse, provide a visual representation of the island's landscape. The area also serves an educational purpose by introducing visitors to Vietnam's maritime and island heritage.
This is the largest collection in terms of the number of specimens, with more than 23,000 specimens representing approximately 5,000 marine species. The collection ranges from smaller organisms such as cnidarians, crustaceans, and mollusks to less commonly encountered species such as sturgeons, ocean sunfish, giant clams weighing more than 100kg, and king crabs. Each specimen is accompanied by information explaining its biological characteristics and ecological role, giving visitors an overview of the diversity of Vietnam's marine ecosystems.
